China’s Oppression of Uighur Muslims: Concentration Camps

A Voice That Needs To Be Heard

It is estimated that Chinese authorities have detained more than 1 million Uighur's and other Turkic Muslims. It has become so extreme, yet the government officials have done nothing to prevent it.

In fact, the Turkish leader, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who visited Beijing has been largely silent on this matter and has left it in the hands of the Chinese government.

The point is that why leave the Muslims to suffer in the “re-education camps”, as proclaimed by China? Why should we let them get bombarded with Chinese traditions and values?

In a recent event on protecting religious freedom, President Trump, who was the host of the event, did not mention the concentration camps in China and completely ignored it. He was silent on this matter like the rest of us and neglected it as if it weren’t a thing. The numbers are rising, and over 3 million Muslims could be detained in the camps.

State Councilor and foreign minister of China, Wang Yi, says, “The education and training centers are schools that help the people free themselves from terrorism and extremism and acquire useful skills”. However, it has been reported that Muslims are being tortured in the camps, with certain principles and values they are forced to learn.

If not a single country would take action on this issue, then other countries would not feel the pressure to do it either. This is just the reality. We need to take a step and raise awareness so that our brothers who are detained in the camp can be set free. If we keep neglecting this issue, then China will succeed in its sole purpose, and that is to make the world silent on this matter.

Why wait till it bothers us? Why not take action ahead of time?

This is one of the most inhumane policies that China came up with to stop terrorism in the country. Not only the Ughuirs are forced to learn things that follow Chinese tradition, but they are also forced to do labour work which involves the manufacturing of clothes, and other products for sale at home and abroad. A recent investigation shows that women are also coerced to take birth control and have abortions.

Overall, it is getting worse and worse and we need to take an action. Signing petitions, getting involved, and raising awareness are some of the things that can be easily done to stop Muslims from getting detained in the camps.
